On the front of each camera, there is a model number.

The flash model number will be on its front as well

The camera will be an F-something or N-something

The electronic flash unit will be an SB-something

The Nikon D3100 is the best Nikon camera for beginners. It's an entry level dSLR that has on-board assistance and easy-To-Use Nikon Guide Mode with intuitive controls. Its easy to use and gives great quality still shots as well as videos. Read this detailed review to get opinions on its performance:
Nikon Coolpix L120 is a good camera. But, if you are looking into getting a DSLR, then I would suggest you to put some extra bucks and buy Nikon D3100. Its new and upgraded version of Nikon D3000.
One big drawback in D3000 was that it has a CCD sensor which is not good compared to CMOS sensor in the D3100.

Regards user friendly, personally I would have to say that the systems Olympus and Panasonic have in some of their cameras is far more user friendly than anything I've seen on a Nikon. FujiFilm cameras are not bad either, with Sony and Cannon trying (and failing) to implement similar systems. Of course what's user friendly to one person is just bloody annoying to another.

I wouldn't say any camera is more user friendly than another.
I shoot canon but I could pick up and use a Nikon with a little bit of looking and reading the menu's. A Nikon shooter could easily pick up my cameras and shoot with them in the same way.
The one I shoot with is going to be easier for me to use because I know where the controls are and it's habit to change my settings the way that I do.
