Nikon Cameras
Why Choose a Nikon Camera Over Any Other?
By Dan J. Ford
This question has fueled many verbal wars. Proclaiming your favorite camera brand is like choosing your favorite football team, or automobile. There is always someone supporting another side, that knows his choice, is the right choice. And they are more than happy to let you know, and point out the error of your ways.
There are many camera brands on the market, and many of them carry high-quality cameras. This year the new model from brand X may be the greatest thing since sliced bread. By the next release, all of the other serious brands will have that same feature. If the feature goes over well, the other companies will add it as soon as possible.
Nikon cameras has garnered a strong following, and for good reasons. Many times when a company adds a new popular feature that the other companies don’t have, that company is Nikon. Nikon is, and has always been, an industry leader in camera development. When large corporations, or governments need the highest quality camera available, they go to Nikon. As an example in 1971 Nikon was commissioned to build 35mm SLR cameras for the NASA Apollo Space Program. These ‘space cameras’ would supplement the Hasselblad 70mm cameras that were being used at the time.
These cameras were based on the Nikon Photomic FTN F body. They had to withstand the rigors of space flight, and yet still be usable by astronauts while wearing gloves. Everything from the batteries, to the lubricants used, had to meet special requirements presented by NASA. One requirement of being used in space, meant that there could be no battery leakage, or RFI (radio frequency interference). These cameras first went into space in July 1971 for the Apollo 15 moon landing mission. They were continually improved, and the features and improvements were added to models available to the public, first in professional models, and later, in consumer models.
Nikon is so well thought of in industry circles that when Canon first started out, they contracted with Nikon for NIKKOR lenses. In fact, the first camera made by Canon was in large part a Nikon. Nippon Kogaku, Nikon’s original name, was responsible for the rangefinder, the viewfinder, the lens mount, and the lens. It was not until 1937 that Canon started developing their own lenses. Even then the Canon lenses were not available until after World War II.
Many people choose Nikon cameras for different reasons. If they started out with an older Nikon camera, they may choose one today. This allows them to reuse their old lenses and many other accessories. Imagine if you had $1,000 invested in lenses and equipment. You wouldn’t want to sell them cheap, and start buying all over again.
People that have used Nikons for years just like they way they work. Nikon cameras seem to be very rugged and reliable. They last a long time, and their users get accustomed to where the camera controls are located. When you pick up a different brand, even a high-quality one, the controls just don’t feel right. Many users report that they have had no problems with their Nikon cameras, even when many years old. They just seem to work.
If you want a high-quality camera that won’t give you any problems, then you are bound to consider a Nikon. Ask almost any professional photographer, or serious amateur, and they will give you the reasons why they choose Nikon cameras.
